Wayne, NJ- The Ice Vault Arena in Wayne, NJ, opened its doors again this past weekend to some of the top junior and midget programs from across the country for the 6th annual Jersey Hitmen Classic Showcase tournament. The tournament has grown from 12 teams in 2006 to 50 teams in 2012. Teams from the EJHL, AJHL, USEHL, Empire, MET, NAPHL, ESHL and EJEPHL were all in attendance, along with USA hockey sanctioned independent teams.
"It was a tremendous event," one NHL scout commented. "The Hitmen really know how to put on a show and make people feel welcomed."
Another college scout commented, "The teams were great, the talent was the best it’s ever been, and the amenities are second to none versus any other junior arena on the east coast. I will be back next year for the hockey first and the restaurant, second."
The four Hitmen teams entered into the event, the EJHL team, Empire, USEHL and EJEPHL went a combined 10-1 in the event. After the event we were able to speak with EJHL head coach and tournament director, Toby Harris, about the event and this season’s outlook.
"I was very happy with the tournament. I was a very competitive event, with a lot of great games and a great scouting presence." Harris continued, "Every staff that I had the chance to speak with at the showcase told me that they would undoubtedly be back, so we are already looking forward and planning for 2013."
Coach Harris then went into his preview on this season's EJHL roster.
"I really like where we are at early. Like everyone else, we come out of training camp with a few key injuries, but I believe our strength lies in our depth. I also like that the team has bonded together very quickly, we have not only a lot of skilled players on this team, but we have a bunch of very good kids. I know it is early, but I really think that this team has something special. I am excited to see where the season takes us," he said.
The Jersey Hitmen organization would like to thank all the participants that competed in the 6th annual Jersey Hitmen Classic and look forward to seeing you all in attendance next September.
